BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF HISTORY- ANTIQUE

FINE SILVER MOUNTED BRITISH OFFICER'S PISTOL BY STANTON, WITH BRASS CANNON BARREL, BRASS LOCK, SILVER HALLMARKED FOR CHARLES FREETH.

 This fine silver mounted pistol had silver
hallmark dates for 1780 and was made by
William Stanton, who is recorded at 1
Pleasant Row, Newington, London. The 3
stage barrel features a flared and turned
cannon muzzle. The octagonal section of
barrel is engraved with florals on top 3
flats, near girdle, and marked "London" in
script on top. There are 2 Tower private
proofs on the left side. Flat, stepped,
brass lockplate with light wriggle work
engraving around border, bridled pan,
swan neck cock, center of plate signed
"Stanton". Intricate pierced silver ribbon
sideplate with borders and floral motifs.
Complete with original wooden ramrod
with horn tip. Ramrod retained by a
single silver ferrule and feeding into a
reinforced silver mouth. Silver trigger
guard with a floral in diamond on the
bow and an edelweiss and shell finial. The
silver hallmarks are for Charles Freeth,
Birmingham, 1780. Circassian walnut
stock of Georgian form, carved in relief
around barrel tang with shell. Silver
thumbpiece depicting another edelweiss
and a pendant. Silver pommel cap with
additional duplicate proofs, and
decorated foliate and shell. CONDITION:
Overall very good. Brass has a lovely
mustard patina with some light polishing
marks. Stock is good with some handling
marks and a few minor chips; top of lock
has a small crack above rear tang. Silver
is very good and shows crisp hallmarks.
Mechanically fine, bore is excellent. This is
an exceptionally fine cannon barrel silver
mounted pistol with a brass lock and
